Kathua, May 23

In a historic feat that has brought immense pride to Jammu & Kashmir, Cadet Mohit Knathia of Government Degree College (GDC) Kathua has successfully scaled Mount Everest (8,848.86 m) as part of the prestigious National Cadet Corps (NCC) Everest Expedition 2025. He reached the summit on May 18, becoming the only cadet from the Union Territory selected for this year’s mission.
The expedition, flagged off by Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh on April 3, 2025, saw ten cadets selected from across India following a rigorous national-level selection and training process. Cadet Mohit’s remarkable endurance, discipline, and commitment set him apart, earning him a coveted spot in the elite team.
Prior to the Everest attempt, the cadets underwent extensive training, including a winter acclimatization camp at Siachen Base Camp and a Pre-Everest expedition to Mount Abi Gamin. The final ascent was conducted under the expert guidance of the Army Mountaineering Institute, braving treacherous weather and formidable terrain.
At the summit, Cadet Mohit proudly unfurled the National Flag and the NCC Flag, symbolizing the spirit of unity, courage, and determination that defines the NCC. This marks the third successful Everest expedition by the NCC, following earlier summits in 2013 and 2016.
Principal of GDC Kathua, Prof. Seema Mir, lauded the accomplishment, saying, “Cadet Mohit Knathia’s success is a shining example of perseverance and passion. He has not only made our college proud but has also become a beacon of inspiration for the youth of Jammu & Kashmir.” She also praised Lt. (Dr.) Daya Ram, Associate NCC Officer at GDC Kathua, for his vital mentorship and continuous efforts in nurturing excellence within the unit.
The college further acknowledged the pivotal contributions of Col. Kuldeep Kachroo and Subedar Shyam Chand, Training JCO of 4 J&K NCC Battalion, whose tireless training initiatives and support were instrumental in Mohit’s preparation and success.
Cadet Mohit’s achievement is a resounding testament to the high standards of training, leadership, and character building fostered by the NCC and the Directorate of J&K & Ladakh.
