NSS Units of GGM SC College Jammu Organize Plantation Drive to Celebrate “Van Mahotsav 2024: ‘Ek Paudha Maa Kay Naam’ .

Jammu : The NSS Units of GGM Science College, Jammu, organized a grand plantation drive to mark the celebration of “Van Mahotsav 2024: with the theme ‘Ek Paudha Maa Kay Naam’.” The event was held to emphasize the importance of tree plantation and to encourage the protection and
preservation of the environment.

Van Mahotsav, also known as the Festival of Trees, is celebrated every year in the first week of July. This week-long festival was initiated in 1950 by K.M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food, to create enthusiasm among masses for forest conservation and planting trees. It aims to spread awareness about the environmental benefits of trees, such as improving air quality, providing habitats for wildlife, and combating climate change.

Dr. Romesh Kumar Gupta, Principal of GGM Science College, addressed the gathering and highlighted the significance of Van Mahotsav. He emphasized the crucial role of trees in sustaining life on Earth and urged everyone to take active participation in tree plantation activities. Dr. Gupta also appreciated the efforts of the NSS units in organizing such an impactful event. Dr. R.K. Bhat, in his speech, talked about the urgent need to combat deforestation and the role of educational institutions in promoting environmental sustainability. He encouraged the students to become ambassadors of green initiatives and to involve their families and communities in tree plantation drives.

The event was graced by esteemed Professors including Dr. Narinder Kumar, Prof. Lekh Raj, Dr. M.S. Saini, and Dr. Sunil Dutt. Each of them shared insights on the importance of conserving nature and applauded the college’s initiative in celebrating Van Mahotsav.

Dr. Rahul Kait and Dr. Neha Sharma, the program officers, played a pivotal role in orchestrating the event. Their dedication and hard work were acknowledged by the Principal, Dr. Romesh Kumar Gupta, who lauded their efforts in making the plantation drive a success. He also praised the NSS volunteers and staff for their enthusiasm and active participation.

The plantation drive saw the enthusiastic involvement of NSS volunteers and staff, who were very happy to contribute to this noble cause. They planted various species of trees in and around the college campus, ensuring a greener and healthier environment for future generations.
